Āraṇya-parvan ('The Book of the Forest'). Āraṇaya Parvan covers the 12 years of the Pāṇḍavas’ exile in the forest and the book has been described as a storehouse of myths, legends and instruction of all sorts. Sage Markaṇdeya narrates a version of Rāmāyaṇa and the story of Satyavān-Sāvitri to Yudhiṣṭhira who is grieving over the events exiling them to the forest.
